Comedy Podcast Statistics: Audience Reach, Listening Habits, and Genre Trends

Key comedy podcast statistics covering U.S. rankings, audience age, global listening, downloads, completion, and listener behavior.

Comedy is one of the strongest podcast categories in the available research. Edison Research at SSRS ranked comedy as the top U.S. podcast genre in Q1 2024, while Spotify reported that comedy represented more than one-fifth of worldwide podcast listening hours in the first three months of 2023. The figures below cover different audiences, countries, periods, and measurement methods, so each statistic is identified in its original context.

U.S. genre rankings

Comedy’s leading position appears repeatedly in Edison Research at SSRS genre tracking. It was the top podcast genre in the United States in Q1 2022, again in Q2 2022, and across the Q4 2022 through Q1 2023 ranker. It remained number one in Q1 2024 after the prior quarterly rankers.

The Q1 2024 results also placed comedy ahead of Society & Culture and News. Edison reported that comedy held the largest U.S. weekly podcast listening audience among people age 13 and older during that quarter. Society & Culture ranked second, and News ranked third. Nineteen genres reached at least 1% among weekly U.S. listeners age 13+ in Q1 2024.

The Q2 2022 top five were Comedy, News, Society and Culture, True Crime, and Sports, in that order. Eighteen genres had at least 1% reach among U.S. listeners age 18+ in that quarter. In Q1 2022, nineteen genres reached at least 1% among U.S. listeners age 18+.

Edison surveyed 8,000 U.S. podcast listeners for genre tracking covering Q2 2021 through Q1 2022. Its Q4 2022 through Q1 2023 genre ranker surveyed 10,797 U.S. podcast listeners. These sample sizes describe the research programs; they are not estimates of the total U.S. podcast audience.

The longer view also favors comedy. Edison reported that comedy was the top U.S. podcast genre in 2019, with 36% reach among weekly podcast consumers. In Q1 2024, the genre still held the largest audience, while Society & Culture and News remained in the top three.

Some genres changed position between the Q1 2023 and Q1 2024 rankers. Music moved up two spots, Fiction moved up two spots, and Education and Religion & Spirituality each moved up one spot. Those movements describe rank changes, not changes in the size of each genre’s audience.

Audience reach by age

Edison’s age breakdown shows a particularly strong relationship between comedy and younger weekly podcast listeners. Among weekly podcast listeners age 18–24, 62% listened to a comedy podcast in the last week. The same measure was 39% among listeners age 25+.

That is a 23-percentage-point difference between the two age groups. The result does not mean that comedy is absent among older listeners; rather, it shows that the reported weekly reach was substantially higher among 18–24-year-olds in this comparison.

For listeners age 18–24, Society & Culture reached 24% in the last week and True Crime reached 20%, according to Edison Research at SSRS. Comedy’s 62% figure was therefore more than twice the reported reach of either of those two genres in this age group.

Among listeners age 25+, News reached 31%, Society & Culture reached 27%, and True Crime reached 19%. Sports and Business each reached 11%. Comedy’s 39% remained the highest figure among the age-25+ comparisons reported here.

Edison also reported that comedy reached 48% of Gen Z monthly podcast listeners age 13–24. This is a monthly measure for a defined age range, so it should not be treated as interchangeable with the 62% weekly figure for listeners age 18–24.

These distinctions matter when interpreting podcast statistics. A weekly genre ranking, a last-week listening measure, and a monthly reach estimate answer related but different questions.

Why listeners choose podcasts

Pew Research Center found that 47% of podcast listeners in the United States said comedy was a topic they listened to. Entertainment, pop culture, and the arts were cited by 46%. Other reported topics included true crime at 34%, self-help and relationships at 32%, money and finance at 31%, religion and spirituality at 30%, health and fitness at 27%, sports at 22%, and race and ethnicity at 15%.

The reasons people listen extend beyond genre labels. Pew found that entertainment was a major reason for 60% of podcast listeners. Learning was a major reason for 55%, and having something to listen to while doing something else was a major reason for 52%. Staying up to date about current events was a major reason for 29%.

Comedy fits especially directly with the entertainment motivation, but the audience data also suggests that podcast use is multi-purpose. A listener may choose a comedy show for entertainment while commuting, working, or handling another activity. The supplied Pew figures measure reported reasons and topics; they do not establish that one reason caused a particular listening choice.

Pew also measured actions listeners took because of a podcast. Sixty percent watched a movie, read a book, or listened to music because of a podcast. Fifty-two percent followed a podcast or its hosts on social media. Thirty-six percent tried a lifestyle change, and 28% purchased a product advertised on a podcast.

For creators and writers, those figures show that podcast listening can connect with activity beyond the audio episode. They should not be read as comedy-specific conversion rates: Pew’s action measures cover podcast listeners generally, while the comedy topic measure is a separate statistic.

Global listening and episode engagement

Spotify for Creators reported that comedy accounted for over 20% of all podcast listening hours worldwide during the first three months of 2023. Spotify also said comedy was the top podcast genre globally in its 2022 Fan Study.

Spotify’s genre engagement study placed comedy’s episode completion rate at 82.3% among the top 20 genres. The average comedy episode length in that study was 49 minutes. Completion rate and episode length describe different parts of the listening experience: one reports how much of an episode was completed, while the other reports average duration.

Chile provides a separate country example from Spotify Newsroom. More than 89,000 hours of comedy content were consumed each day in Chile. Spotify said comedy genre listening there had grown by an average of 842% year over year since 2017. Listeners under age 30 represented 57% of comedy listens in Chile, and more than 50% of Chilean listeners enjoyed comedy podcasts on Spotify.

The Chile figures use a local market and Spotify-specific framing, while the worldwide listening-hours figure covers a global platform audience. They should not be combined into a single global estimate. The 842% figure is an average year-over-year growth statement since 2017, not a claim that every year or every program grew by exactly that amount.

BBC Sounds recorded 2.3 billion total plays of radio, music, and podcasts from January through November 2024. BBC Sounds also reported a 12% increase for on-demand speech content in 2024. These are broader BBC Sounds measures and are not comedy-only statistics, but they place spoken audio within a large service-level listening environment.

Downloads and audience composition

Triton Digital reported that comedy accounted for 15% of podcast downloads in the United States in 2023, through the reporting summarized by Sounds Profitable. Triton later reported a 13% comedy share of U.S. podcast downloads in 2024 through Podnews.

The two percentages come from different years and cited reporting outlets. A download share is not the same as listening-hours share, episode completion, audience reach, or the percentage of people who name comedy as a topic. The 2023 and 2024 figures therefore show reported download shares for their respective years rather than a direct measure of audience decline.

Triton said 62% of comedy podcast listeners were male in 2023 and 61% were male in 2024. These figures describe the reported gender composition of comedy podcast listeners in each year. They do not indicate the size of the total comedy audience or explain why the composition changed by one percentage point.

The broader U.S. podcast market was also measured in Triton’s 2023 reporting. Forty percent of the U.S. population reported listening to a podcast within the past month. Monthly podcast listeners grew 12% over the prior two years, listeners over age 55 increased 22% over the prior two years, and female listeners age 18+ increased 19% over the prior two years.

Those market-wide growth figures help describe the environment in which comedy podcasts compete. They are not comedy-specific growth rates. The age and gender changes are reported over the prior two years, while the 40% figure is a monthly listening measure for 2023.

Gen Z and platform preferences

KS&R’s Podcast Frenzy research found that 47% of Gen Z podcast listeners preferred comedy. The same research reported that 34% of Gen Z respondents preferred pop culture podcasts, and 45% preferred YouTube for video podcasting.

The three measures address different choices. Comedy and pop culture are content preferences, while YouTube is a preferred platform for video podcasting. The figures should not be added together or interpreted as mutually exclusive shares.

The Edison findings point in a similar direction for younger audiences: 62% of weekly podcast listeners age 18–24 listened to comedy in the last week, and comedy reached 48% of Gen Z monthly podcast listeners age 13–24. The age bands and listening windows differ, so the percentages are complementary indicators rather than duplicate measurements.

Taken together, the reported statistics show comedy leading U.S. genre rankings, reaching 47% of podcast listeners as a named topic in Pew’s research, and holding strong positions in global Spotify measures. Its audience profile varies by market, age group, platform, and measurement method, which makes the exact context of each percentage essential when using comedy podcast statistics in writing or analysis.
